Christmas Advent Calendar for my Grandchildren

Last updated on 12/18/2016 By Catherine Tatum Catherine Tatum

The Christmas Advent Calendar that I made for my grandchildren is one best gifts I’ve made.    I enjoy seeing how excited they are to open a new door each day of Advent.    I’ve created gifts for many years but this is one gift that I never plan to sell.    About four years ago I had the idea of using some of the Classic Legacy charms and jewelry findings to create an Advent Calendar.    I grew up opening the little paper windows of the wonderful German advent calendars that my aunt gave to our family.  Each day beginning on December 1 a special door or window is opened to reveal a special surprise to prepare for the greatest gift that is revealed on the December 25th door…..the Christ Child in the manager scene.   This year Matthew is six and can read the Scripture that I put on the back of each piece.   I found the wooden House at Target and then used the Classic Legacy findings to create the Advent surprises for each day.

Advent Calendar House
This is the wooden Advent Calendar house I purchased at Target a few years ago. Each door is large enough to hold the enamel finding. The children begin opening doors on December 1 and the final door is Christmas Day December 25th.
Advent Calendar Classic Legacy Gift
I used one of the Classic Legacy findings with black enamel. I added Christmas related charms  and numbers from 1 to 25.  On the back I added a verse. This one is from Micah 6:8. “Act Justly, Love Mercy, and Walk Humbly with your God.”
Advent Findings on the Refrigerator
I added a magnet to the back of each Finding. For young children it is easy to put these on the refrigerator. There is also a loop on each one in case they would like to hang the advent numbers on a tree one day.
Children Take Turns Opening Advent Calendar
The children are now 2, 4, and 6 and take turns opening the doors of the Advent Calendar.

Sometimes it is the simple gifts that are the best!   I’m glad I made this one.   Merry Christmas to you!

What a wonderful gift for your grandchildren. My mother made felt advent calendars with pockets that contained figures and ornaments from the Christmas Story to pin on the advent tree each day. My children and grandchildren enjoyed taking turns as well. Have a wonderful holiday and thank you for sharing this beautiful tradition.

Thanks Kathy for your comment. I also made one similar to that for my own children….as Ann mentions…..and my other daughter Leigh has that advent calendar!
